Detroit confirmation to start Sept. 2 to avoid repeat trial questions

By Kali Hays

New York, Aug. 20 – The City of Detroit’s confirmation hearing is now scheduled to begin Sept. 2 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, according to an attorney familiar with the case.

Previously set to begin Aug. 29 to allow individuals without legal representation to hold their portions of the confirmation trial, judge Stephen Rhodes cancelled the initial date “concluding that letting the individuals’ question witnesses should come later in the trial to reduce duplication of the questions that lawyers for objectors may ask,” the attorney said.

A final pre-trial status conference is scheduled for Aug. 29.

The attorney said a further delay is possible, though not expected, as past status conferences “have been somewhat freewheeling where the parties are free to bring up procedural issues and delays have resulted.”

Detroit filed for bankruptcy on July 18, 2013 under Chapter 9 case number 13-53846.
