Detroit committee of unsecured creditors seek legal counsel approval

By Kali Hays

New York, Feb. 18 - The City of Detroit's committee of unsecured creditors applied for approval of legal counsel, according to two Friday court filings with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Eastern Michigan.

The committee has chosen Morrison & Foerster, LLP of New York and Steinberg, Shapiro & Clark of Southfield, Mich., based on their attorneys' experience in handling bankruptcy cases, and requested the hirings be retroactive to Jan. 22, the filings stated.

If approved, the committee's chosen legal counsel would assist it in examining the city's conduct of affairs and claims filed against it, negotiations and disclosure statements, carry out its fiduciary duties and appear with the committee in meetings and at court hearings as they continue with Detroit's Chapter 9 case.

The City of Detroit filed for bankruptcy on July 18, 2013. The Chapter 9 case number is 13-53846.
