Deltex: CardioQ ups monitoring effectiveness; cuts hospital stay

By Elaine Rigoli

Tampa, Fla., Sept. 26 - Deltex Medical Group plc said results of a clinical trial into the use of the CardioQ monitor showed that it is possible to monitor patients having spinal surgery in the prone position effectively and safely using the minimally invasive CardioQ.

The Chichester, U.K.-based hemodynamic monitoring company said patients undergoing spinal surgery are placed face-down on the operating table (prone position) throughout the surgery.

The prone position can have an adverse effect on the patient's blood circulation and potentially lead to complications, the company said in a news release.

It is therefore important to be able to identify and treat any hemodynamic changes in these patients quickly and safely, the release said.

Also, Deltex said results showed the use of peri-operative esophageal Doppler-guided fluid delivery, a technique that enables doctors to identify and deal with reductions in circulating blood volume that arise as a consequence of surgery and are associated with potentially serious complications, significantly reduced hospital length of stay for surgical patients compared to traditional fluid management.
