California ponders $9.3 billion bond measure to increase water supply

By Cristal Cody

Springdale, Ark., July 11 - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) proposed a $9.3 billion bond measure to the state Legislature to update the state's water system.

The measure is expected to be placed on November ballots.

The bonds would pay for increased water storage, improvements to the system to reduce water shortages and additional conservation tools.

The state has experienced a drought for the past two years. Court-ordered water restrictions from Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem have reduced supplies from the state's two largest water systems by 20% to 30%.

Schwarzenegger has declared a statewide drought and a state of emergency in nine Central Valley counties because of low water supplies.
