Cytori Therapeutics receives CE Mark for its Celution stem cell system

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., Jan. 24 - Cytori Therapeutics, Inc. said it has received the CE Mark for its Celution System that can process adult stem cells from adipose (fat) tissue.

This is the first device of its type to receive the CE Mark, according to a company news release.

Cytori will receive an $11 million milestone payment for achieving the CE Mark from Olympus-Cytori Joint Venture. The joint venture, formed in November, is part of Cytori's regenerative medicine collaboration with Olympus Corp.

"This is a significant achievement for Cytori and supports our global development and regulatory strategy for delivering a patient's own stem and regenerative cells in real time," Christopher J. Calhoun, Cytori chief executive officer, said in the release. "We are now positioned to use the Celution System in clinical studies to drive market adoption and reimbursement."

The Celution System is designed to isolate and concentrate a patient's own stem and regenerative cells without the need for cell culture, repeated cell divisions.

European claims include the extraction, wash and concentration of a patient's own stem cells and other associated progenitor cells from their own adipose tissue for re-implantation or re-infusion during the same surgical procedure, the company said.

Cytori Therapeutics develops proprietary cell-based therapeutics using adult stem and regenerative cells derived from adipose tissue.
