Biophan files patent for halloysite nanotubes

By Elaine Rigoli

Tampa, Fla., May 3 - Biophan Technologies, Inc. has filed a U.S. patent application for the use of halloysite nanotubes for controlled release of drugs.

The technology uses halloysite nanotubes, which are being commercialized by NaturalNano, Inc.

These nanotubes, which are hollow inorganic nanostructures derived from clay, allow the linear, controlled release of drugs, according to a news release.

Many classes of drugs, such as pain-killing, chemotherapeutic and cardiovascular drugs, could benefit from controlled dosing for consistent release over time to achieve maximum therapeutic effectiveness and limit potential side effects, officials said.

NaturalNano is a materials science company based in West Henrietta, N.Y.

Located in Rochester, N.Y., Biophan develops technologies for the medical-device industry.
