S&P boosts AmerUs

Standard & Poor's said it raised its counterparty credit rating on AmerUs Group Co. (NYSE:AMH) to A from BBB+.

At the same time, S&P said it affirmed its A+ counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on AmerUs Life Insurance Co. and its related entities: American Investors Life Insurance Co., Bankers Life Insurance Co. of NY and Indianapolis Life Insurance Co.

The outlook is stable.

The agency said that these rating actions follow the closing and final regulatory approval of sale of the companies to Aviva plc (A+/stable).

S&P added that the ratings on AmerUs Group are based on the group's very strong competitive position in the equity-indexed markets, strong earnings performance and very strong capitalization, noting that these positive factors are somewhat offset by large earnings concentration in two product lines.
